Mastered from Live At The Boston Tea Party bootleg LP. Like the vinyl version speed is too fast for first six tracks... The insert says "March 1969" but the source is actually the January 10, 1969 "Professor" reel, except for Sister Ray which comes from the famous "guitar amp" tape.
It was also issued in Japan with obi (ABP-006 and then below it, smaller, in parenthesis, (BPCD 012) and liner notes in Japanese. Importer/seller: ANF SOFT WARE CO., LTD. |

Yet another "Professor"'s reel - it's the only Velvet Underground outdoor performance recording available (except for two brief excerpts from Philip Johnson's Glasshouse 1967 benefit). Plus the bonus Sweet Sister Ray is actually Sister Ray from the "guitar amp" tape. Definitely a must-have. |

8-page booklet. The cover photo is inappropriately taken from the 3rd album promo photo session. Back cover has a rare NYC 1967 photo by Ken Greenberg with John Cale. The line-up on this show was Tucker, Yule, Walter Powers and Willie Alexander. Red velvet pouch with Andy Warhol sticker. First issue is a limited numbered edition of 1000(?) copies. It was also issued in a purple velvet pouch (limited to 30 not numbered copies), and also some in green pouch. Reissued in 1994 without number. Liner claims that it was recorded on October 27, 1969 but actual date is October 18.
Fierce Pup VU fanzine says: "Those of us who picked up End of Cole Ave. last year were teased in the liner notes with the future availability of the first night's recording. Well, it's here; another fine product by the Italian Aulica label. This 2CD set is beautifully packaged in a red velvet, or is it flannel, pouch, and includes the entire first set at the now famous Texan watering hole. It scooped the Mainline box with the bonus 'EP' cuts from the Loaded sessions. Among these trax is the never before heard Countess From Hong Kong, as well as a radically different country version of I Found A Reason complete with harmonica and twangin' ghee-tars? These tracks do sound much better in the Mainline set." (ed note: Hmm... I don't agree with that, I prefer the 'uncleaned' versions).

BATACLAN
Gold Standard 96-08-1015, Italy, 1997
1. I'm Waiting For The Man (5:45) / 2. Berlin (5:31) / 3. The Black Angel's Death Song (5:06) / 4. Wild Child (5:29) / 5. Heroin (7:27) / 6. Femme Fatale (3:23) / 7. No One Is There (6:23) / 8. Frozen Warnings (5:23) / 9. Janitor Of Lunacy (5:12) / 10. I'll Be Your Mirror (4:12) / 11. Ghost Story (3:23) / 12. The Biggest, The Loudest, The Hairiest Group Of All (3:51) / 13. Empty Bottles (3:58).
1-13: Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico, Bataclan, Paris, 29/1/72.
Top quality soundboard recording.
Sal Mercuri says: In case you've ever wondered how the VU would have sounded 'unplugged', here it is. The songs are performed acoustically - Lou on guitar, John on piano, viola, and 12 string, Nico on harmonium. The show was recorded at the Bataclan Club in Paris, Jan. 29, 1972 and broadcast on french TV. Most of us have had to settle for fair to crappy sounding tapes of this show until now. This CD is kind of rough sounding by pro-standards but it seems to come from a soundboard source and is way better than any other rendering (even the fabled and now impossible to find 4 track boot ep). It's strange and sad to think about how much better the VU would have faired had they made it to Europe in their heyday - here they are enthusiastically received on the basis of a not-yet-established cult and no real 'new' material. What kept America in the dark when we had them here? The set seems to be out of sequence but otherwise complete: Waiting for the Man, Berlin (Lou introduces this as his Barbara Streisand song), Black Angel's Death Song, Wild Child (waiting for Johnny to get his 12 string), Heroin, Femme Fatale, Abscheid (actually it is 'No One Is There'), Frozen Warnings, Janitor of Lunacy, I'll Be Your Mirror, Ghost Story, The Biggest, Loudest, Hairiest Group of All (I wonder who John is referring to??!!), Empty Bottles (Cale song from Jennifer Warnes LP he produced). A 'must have' item for the die-hard fan (you know who you are). |

AT THE ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM
Trade Mark Of Quality, Japan, 1998
1. Run Run Run intro to Miss Joanie Lee / Day Tripper intro to Boom Boom Boom Boom instrumental / Rockabilly instrumental / Blues instrumental / Heroin / There She Goes Again / Green Onion / There She Goes Again (44'40) / 2. Heroin (4:08) / 3. I'll Keep It With Mine (3:35) / 4. European Son (4:09) / 5. Get It On Time (2:17) / 6. I'll Be Your Mirror (3:27).
1 : rehearsal, The Factory, NYC, January 3, 1966 / 2-4 : Uptight, Cinematheque, NYC, February 6, 1966 / 5, 6 : rehearsal, The Factory, NYC, March 7, 1966.
This CD is not a copy of the original All Tomorrow's Parties CD. The source seems to be an "audience" recording made at the Andy Warhol Museum, probably taped in front of a speaker playing the original CD in a large hall. The back cover says "Warning: the sound quality on these recordings is below the usual standards. Play it loud or ingest some PCP to get it!". This is obviously a bit exaggerated but sound is rough and has "audience" noises. Back cover and liner list 3 tracks (Walk Alone, Venus In Furs and Rythm & Blues Instrumental) that are actually not included. |

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO - MONO-VERSION
Bogus Ltd. AW 1966, New Zeeland, 2002
1. Sunday Morning / 2. I'm Waiting For The Man / 3. Femme Fatale / 4. Venus In Furs / 5. Run Run Run / 6. All Tomorrow's Parties / 7. Heroin / 8. There She Goes Again / 9. I'll Be Your Mirror / 10. The Black Angel's Death Song / 11. European Son / 12. Poor Richard's (Heroin + Venus In Furs) 23/7/66 / 13. Loop (1966 flexidisc) / 14. Index (1966 flexidisc) / 15. All Tomorrow's Parties (Single version)
1-11: copy of the officially released mono version of the first album / 12 : live at Poor Richard's, June 23, 1966, from Exploding Plastic Inevitable film soundtrack / 13: flexidisc from Aspen magazine #3, December 1966, written by John Cale, and credited to the VU / 14: dialogue from flexidisc coming with Andy Warhol's Index Book, 1966 / 16: mono single version from the official Peel Slowly And See box set.
Digipak with a layout mistake: back cover falsely claims to include I'll Be Your Mirror, The Black Angel's Death Song and European Son twice. "MONO-VERSION; and "- NOT FOR SALE -" printed on CD. The mono mix was probably mastered from a fine vinyl copy. The Index take is actually the same one as on the Australian What Goes On box set, but was heavily treated with some noise-killer software, which didn't improve the sound at all...

This bootleg offers both sets recorded at Max's Kansas City by Brigid Polk on August 23, 1970 - unfortunately last song from second set (Lonesome Cowby Bill) is missing. Sound quality is close to the official Live at Max's release and anyway superior to many previous bootleg releases of the Max's stuff. |

"When the Velvet Underground played three nights in Cleveland at the start of October 1968, founding member John Cale had just departed and Doug Yule had only been in the band for two days. Nonetheless, the revised quartet turned in a superb performance, including then-unreleased songs (with alternative lyrics) and lots of notable guitar soloing, making it an essential document for VU devotees." |

Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, Maureen Tucker and Doug Yule (whod replaced John Cale a full year previously) had developed into a sensationally tight and adventurous quartet, and this show - the first of two recorded on consecutive nights before a tiny audience in Dallas, Texas - is unquestionably one of the finest surviving documents of them in performance." |

1-14: Bataclan, Paris, France, January 29, 1972 / 15-16: rehearsal, London, England, January 1972.
"To the surprise and delight of their growing fanbase, in early 1972 rumors began to circulate that Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico would be performing together again. In fact they only played one show, at the small Bataclan club in Paris on January 29th. Thankfully, however, a soundboard recording was made, preserving the superb concert for posterity. On it the trio perform a cross-section of Velvet Underground and solo material in acoustic settings, offering a unique opportunity to hear familiar songs by three of rock's most enduring cult artists in a fresh style. It makes its long-awaited return to CD here, together with background notes and two rare tracks culled from a rehearsal held in London shortly before the gig." |

"1968 was a tumultous year for the Velvet Underground, with the departure of John Cale, the addition of Doug Yule, a gruelling touring schedule and considerable musical transition. Supported by the MC5, the quartet played their final shows of the year at the Boston Tea Party, which Lou Reed once described as his favorite place to play. This legendary live recording find them playing reworked version of early classics as well as several songs that would appear on their forthcoming third album, and two tracks that went unreleased in their lifetime. An essential document of a great band at their most vital, it's presented here together with background notes and images." |

"To the surprise and delight of their growing fan base, in early 1972 rumors began to circulate that Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico would be performing together again. In fact they only played one show, at the small Bataclan club in Paris on January 29th. Thankfully, however, a soundboard recording was made, preserving the superb concert for posterity. On it the trio perform a cross-section of Velvet Underground and solo material in acoustic settings, offering a unique opportunity to hear familiar songs by three of rock s most enduring cult artists in a fresh style. Presented here, together with background notes, bonus DVD and two rare tracks culled from a rehearsal held in London shortly before the gig." |
