November 25, 2003 Le Bataclan '72
Lou Reed, John Cale & Nico The disc comes in a 3-folder digipack with a 16-page booklet which offers liner notes by Nina Antonia and photos. This first and long-time awaited official edition is not an upgrade for sound quality but it includes the encore All Tomorrow's Parties which was missing on the various bootleg releases (I wouldn't swear that it's the soundboard version however). On the other hand, there is no speed correction and the whole recording is too slow (6%)as compared with the French TV broadcast. Also there is a mastering glitch at 2:29 in Heroin which is not on the bootlegs.

June 21, 2003 The Square: Stills from the Scene
A former manager of the old Boston Tea Party (now Avalon), poet, and unsuccessful candidate for Cambridge City Council, Steve Nelson was part of the Harvard Square milieu back in the late '60s and early '70s, when the Square served as a barracks for the counterculture. His photographs of the era -- most of which have never been exhibited -- capture not the large events of those times but instead smaller moments and passing details and characters: critic John Kreidl (publisher of the early rock-mag Vibrations); Modern Lover Jonathan Richman hanging at Cardell's cafeteria; Peter Wolf in all his Geils band glory; and students hawking the old Cambridge Phoenix (precursor to this publication). Nelson's "The Square: Stills from the Scene," opening today at Suffolk University's New England School of Art and Design, distills those people and places into an intimate portrait of a bygone era. It's up through July 18; that's at 75 Arlington Street in Boston. Call (617) 536-0383. |

March 4, 2003 Sedition & Alchemy
Peter Owen Publishers are about to publish a new biography of John Cale, entitled Sedition & Alchemy. The book is written by Tim Mitchell, and will appear in May this year. Sedition and Alchemy: A Biography of John Cale by Tim Mitchell 0 7206 1132 6 Written with the full cooperation of John Cale and incorporating exclusive interviews with important figures from all phases of the musician's 35-year career, this new biography explores the man who has successfully transcended the boundaries between classical and popular music. Cale's music from the Velvet Underground onwards has been a series of passionate assaults on accepted musical forms, and his processes of deconstruction and reconstruction are illustrated by detailed accounts of his albums, live shows and relationships with other artists such as La Monte Young, Brian Eno and Lou Reed. Exhaustively researched, Sedition and Alchemy also contains the first full discography of John Cale's work to date. Tim Mitchell is the author of There's Something About Jonathan: Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers (also published by Peter Owen), described by Record Collector as the best book you can imagine anyone writing about Jonathan Richman. February 15, 2003 Lou Reed assembles career retrospective
LOU REED ASSEMBLES CAREER RETROSPECTIVE TWO CD SET SPANS WORK FROM VELVET UNDERGROUND TO THIS YEAR'S THE RAVEN SET FOR RELEASE MAY 6 BY BMG HERITAGE Lou Reed spent much of January 2003 in a NYC studio, assembling the 31 track, 2-cd, career-spanning retrospective album 'NYC Man-The Ultimate Lou Reed Collection,' set for release May 6 by BMG Heritage. Reed was intimately involved -- the quintessential New Yorker selected, sequenced and oversaw the remastering of 'NYC Man,' choosing from over 150 source tapes (masters, multi-tracks, reference copies), making this by far the highest quality sounding collection of his work. Reed sequenced 'NYC Man' not chronologically, but sonically, organizing and juxtaposing the songs by how they sound next to each other. In fact, ‘NYC Man’ begins with "Who Am I," in an unreleased alternate take version from Reed’s new album 'The Raven,' and ends with Reed's 1969 Velvet Underground recording of "Pale Blue Eyes." "There are interesting times ahead," says Cale. "Stay tuned." |

"The dark heart of Edgar Allan Poe has inspired The Raven, the most sprawling work by Lou Reed since 1975's Metal Machine Music. In his hometown New York, the great naysayer explains how his 38 year career has been "one long idea" about offsetting balances and fighting compression and complacency." |
