LOU REED & THE VELVETS
Nigel Trevena
White Light Publications, United Kingdom, 1973
softcover, 26,4 x 19 cm (10½ x 7½ inch), 40 p.
Bantam, United Kingdom, 1977 [2nd printing]
softcover, 9½ x 7 inch, 40 pages
Nigel Trevena's book was the first source of facts about the Velvet Underground.
This 40-page booklet contains the early history of the Velvets, reviews of the four studio albums and Live At Max's and a discography, as well as Lou Reed-related articles, including an illustrated Waiting For The Man,a selection of rare Lou Reed poems, and a review of Lou Reed's show at Leicester University 14th October 1972. A piece of history that is unfortunately hard to find these days.
The back cover reads "A NIGEL TREVENA PRODUCTION for WHITE LIGHT PUBLICATIONS | Published 1973 | Printed by Prestoprint, Bristol, England".
The second printing is a couple centimeters smaller and has the author's name printed on the front cover. The back cover states "Published and Printed in England | bantam".
HERE COME THE WAVES . . . .
There has been a lot written about Lou Reed over the last eighteen months or so, a sort of publicity binge which probably made a lot of people think he was no more than a talented newcomer. But there are some other people who know different, for Reed has been around a while, and today he patiently marks time, waiting for everyone else to catch up. So there's a story here, and this is an attempt to tell it. Once the facts are dug up, it's a story every bit as fascinating as anything Lou himself could dream up, with a cast of characters which includes a Welshman in black, a freckle-faced girl drummer, a singing icicle and a bullet-scarred Polish artist. A story which opens in New York City, shifts to locations all across the States, moves dramatically to Europe . . . and continues today.
Really, this book can be whatever you want it to be. If you are a Velvets freak with long-service medals, just read it to fill in the gaps, if you are a 70's Reed fan, read it to discover where he's been. Or maybe you're just an average freak-in-the-street, well use it as an introduction to the Real Stuff. Partly a kind of handbook to the music, it's also intended as a clarification of the facts, because for so long nothing was written about the Velvets, and when it finally was it was often mis-informed, sensationalist or unsympathetic. I hope this book sets the facts straight. If I were to dedicate it to anyone, it would be to Lou Reed himself . Like the man said – some White Light returned with thanks.
Finally, thanks to at those who gave me help or encouragement, particularly John Tobler down at ZIGZAG, Andy Childs for the plugs, Linda Meighan for the typesetting, Marilyn Jeffries for the 'Gift' illustrations, and especially Connie Radoulovitch (The American Connection). Thanks also to Bill Allerton, John Marsden and Marilyn Jeffries, without whose insistence I'd probably still be sitting here with a head full of facts instead of a book.

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & LOU REED
Mike West
Babylon Book, Manchester, United Kingdom, 1982
soft cover, 27 x 20,3 cm (10½ x 8 inch), 64 pages
ISBN: 0 907188 13 3
This book presents a timeline and discography of the band and its members' solo careers, accompanied by numerous photos and press clippings. As mentioned in the introduction, the book was originally published as a special edition of the British Velvet Underground fanzine Different Times.
"There are few major rock stars to have been as widely misunderstood as Lou Reed: variously the Warhol bandwagoner, apostle of sleaze, Smack Messaih, Bowie influence/clone. Godfather of Punk and - just lately - Primary Source of '80s rock. The genuinely complex character of Lou Reed has more in common with James Baldwin, Tennessee Williams or Lenny Bruce than with David Cassidy or Adam Ant, and he continues to strain the borders of the simple image that the rock press and public give their heroes. The author takes us through his career, and those of the original Velvet Underground, from "The Shades," "The Primitives" and L.A. & "The Eldorados" up to the present day. Like his own "Murder Mystry" this book provides a dialogue for the drama but leaves the audience to arrange a solution for themselves. It makes stimulating reading..." |

The benchmark for books on the Velvet Underground, particularly on the band's Factory period. This book is based on multiple testimonies from the people involved at the time, richly illustrated with numerous photos. It is divided into 2 main chapters: the first, “Andy Warhol, Up-tight”, covers the period 1965-1966, and the second, “Despite All The Amputations”, covers the years 1967-1970. If there's only one book you need, this is it. The 1995 reissue has been expanded with a new 17-page chapter on the 1993 reunion.
This book has been reprinted many times, but nothing beats the original edition in terms of publication quality and, in particular, richness of illustration.
"I like Victor Bockris and Gerard Malanga's book and am impressed by the scope of it. - Sterling Morrison" |

"Were you one of the lucky few to witness the Happenings rocking the scene when rock was still new? Did something inside you awaken at the dawn of punk? Ever following its own muse, Velvet Underground needs no introduction to the faithful insiders who knew its greatness in '65 and, relishing the grunge and alternative sounds of the '90s, understand that VU began it all. For music lovers of any generation and seekers of the murky springwaters flowing into rock'n'roll's wide river, The Velvet Underground Companion collects reviews, interviews with band members, and critical commentary that tells for posterity the true significance of this trailblazing band."
Sal Mercuri says: "It is a rather large (300 + pages) collection of articles and essays gathered from many different sources over the past 30 years. The 'meat' is a newly translated version of the classic Feedback: The Legend of the Velvet Underground by Ignacio Julia. This was originally published as beautifully illustrated book in Spain, 1986 and is based on lengthy, in-depth interviews with Sterling Morrison. The book is actually a companion to an equally excellent Catalonian TV documentary of the same name. The original edition of this book included a live VU flexi of Sister Ray and an English translation. Ignacio told me that he was very unhappy with the translation (as was Sterling) so it's great that he did it himself this time. There are many other interesting articles and interviews in the VU Companion and a large, though somewhat outdated discography. It is a very handy book and a must for us fans." |

"A comprehensive chronicle of the work of an American Master, Pass Thru Fire is breathtaking in its power and raw beauty, and crucial to an appreciation of Lou Reed not only as a consummate musician of the underground, but also as one of the truly significant poets of our time. Spanning over thirty years of work - from his early days with the Velvet Underground, to the classics "Transformer," "Berlin," and "New York"; From the elegiac "Magic and Loss" to his brilliant collaborative production with Robert Wilson, "Time Rocker" - here are the lyrics that move beyond reportage to take "emotional albeit non-moral stances."" |

Written with the full cooperation of John Cale and incorporating exclusive interviews with important figures from all phases of the musician's 35-year career, this new biography explores the man who has successfully transcended the boundaries between classical and popular music. Cale's music from the Velvet Underground onwards has been a series of passionate assaults on accepted musical forms, and his processes of deconstruction and reconstruction are illustrated by detailed accounts of his albums, live shows and relationships with other artists such as La Monte Young, Brian Eno and Lou Reed. Exhaustively researched, Sedition and Alchemy also contains the first full discography of John Cale's work to date.
Tim Mitchell is the author of There's Something About Jonathan: Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers (also published by Peter Owen), described by Record Collector as the best book you can imagine anyone writing about Jonathan Richman.

"In 1966, studios were still more about science than art. Clients who dare make technical suggestions were treated with bemusement, derision, or hostility. The Velvets were a young band under constant critical attack, and the pressure to conform in order to gain acceptance must have been tremendous. Most bands of that era have compromised with their record companies, through wholesale revamping of their image, changing or omitting lyrics, creating drastically edited versions for radio airplay, or eliminating songs entirely from their sets and records. With Andy Warhol in the band's corner, such threats were minimized.
The Velvet Underground and Nico has influenced the sound of more bands than almost any other album. And remarkably, it still sounds as fresh and challenging today as it did upon its release in 1967. In this book, Joe Harvard covers everything from Lou Reed's lyrical genius to John Cale's groundbreaking instrumentation, and from the creative input of Andy Warhol to the fine details of the recording process. With input from co-producer Norman Dolph and Velvets fan Jonathan Richman, Harvard documents the creation of a record which, in the eyes of many, has never been matched.
Joe Harvard was co-founder and owner of Fort Apache Studios. Voted Boston's Best Producer, his playing appears on numerous records by bands including Dinosaur Jr., Throwing Muses and the Pernice Brothers."

ISBN: 1-904768-27-X

"Though The Velvet Underground existed for no more than three years with its original members, it is considered to be not just the 'ultimate New York band' but also the most influential group ever. Artists who have acknowledged such influence include David Bowie, The Sex Pistols, Patti Smith, Joy Division, and Nirvana. Witts places the band and its genesis in the cultural context of Manhattan's beatnik bohemianism, its radical artistic environment, and the city's negative reaction to California's 'Hippie' counterculture. Lou Reed's Brill Building background is also considered, while his "Primitives" (1964-5) and "Velvet Underground Songs" (1965-70) are examined within the stylistic context of rock music. The band's sound world is likewise considered in this light. John Cale's experimental contribution is assessed, especially his work for LaMonte Young (The Theatre of Eternal Music) and what he carried from that experience into the Velvet's sound. The visual artist Amdy Warhol, known to the Velvets as Drella, became the band's manager and produce in 1965. He placed his 'superstar' Nico in the line-up (which already included a female drummer). The radical nature of the group's Warhol period performances are examined, together with those aspects related to issues of gender, sexuality and drugs culture by which the Warhol Factory scene was identified, and contemplated in Reed's songs. Witts examines the musical influences of the Velvets on punk, post-punk and subsequent rock movements, culminating in the group's reunion of 1993. He also indexes the variety of media constructions that the group endured through the years and how these affected Cale, Nico and Reed and their attempts to establish solo careers."

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND | AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

"Hardly anyone bought the Velvet Underground's albums when they were released, but most everyone who did formed a band. This was the kind of influence the Velvets exerted, and it persists to this day in the sounds of groups as diverse as Patti Smith, Talking Heads, Sex Pistols, R.E.M., My Bloody Valentine, and Sonic Youth - all of whom claim the Velvets as their most important influence. And then there are such soundalikes as Yo La Tengo, Luna, and the Strokes, to name a few. Published on the forty-fifth anniversary of the Velvet Underground's founding, this is the first illustrated history of the band that rocked rock - one of the most inspired and influential rock 'n' roll bands of all time. The book follows this icon of Sixties rock from its heady first days with Lou Reed, John Cale, German chanteuse Nico, drummer Moe Tucker, and guitarist Sterling Morrison; through its management by pop artist Andy Warhol, who made the band the siren of his Factory and part of his traveling multimedia show, the Exploding Plastic Inevitable; to its later incarnations in the early Seventies. "They opened wounds worth opening with brutal imagery, without apology," Patti Smith said, upon the band's 1996 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And this book offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at how the Velvet Underground did it."

From never-before-seen photographs of the band's first live show in New York to Andy Warhol's cover and poster designs, Lou Reed's handwritten music and lyrics, underground press clippings and controversial reviews, flyers, handbills, and posters, the materials here comprise a uniquely comprehensive survey of the first rock group ever to transcend the genre and embrace underground popular culture. Story.
"Perhaps no other band can claim such scant chart success and so enduring a musical legacy as The Velvet Underground. Artists including David Bowie, the Sex Pistols, Joy Division, Roxy Music, Nirvana, U2, R.E.M. and dissident Czech playwright and eventual president, Vaclav Havel have all cited the Velvets as a major influence. Yet only two of their albums even scraped Billboard's Top 200. Formed by the mercurial Lou Reed and classically-trained Welshman John Cale, the band first achieved notoriety after being adopted by Andy Warhol, who set himself up as manager and producer and included the Velvets in his Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia roadshow. However, much more than a pop art support act, the freedom Warhol's patronage brought enabled the group to chart hitherto unexplored regions of the rock n' roll soundscape, producing unforgettable and unsettling music that veered from droning, avant-garde experimentalism to folk-infused pop, taking in taboo-busting tales of drug addiction, prostitution and sexual deviance along the way. Creative tensions and frustrated ambition eventually saw both Cale and Reed leave the band, with Doug Yule taking over on lead vocals before an entirely unoriginal lineup came to an ignominious end in Europe. But in the decades since and several abortive reunions later The Velvet Underground's music has attained classic status, revered alongside The Beatles and The Beach Boys as one of the well-springs of modern pop. Now Rob Jovanovic peels back the mystique to tell the story of one of the most important bands in rock history."

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND EXPERIENCE
Editorial coordination: Christian Fevret and Carole Mirabello. Editors: JC Gabel and Margot Ross. Design: Change is Good, Paris
Hat & Beard Press, hardcover, 216 p., 8.5 x 11 in. (21.59 x 27.94 cm), Los Angeles CA, USA, May 1, 2019
ISBN 978-1-7320561-3-8
At the heart of 1960s avant-garde New York was the convergence of Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Moe Tucker, heralding an unprecedented musical revolution. The Velvet Underground was a unique group for its time, fueled by the visual arts, poetry, and stage performance, as much by ideas of sexual transgression and the subversion of social norms.
Compiled from archival ephemera, unpublished photographs, films, album covers, posters, fanzines, letters, testimonies, and poems, this monograph gathers anew the Velvet Underground Experience exhibition that opened in Paris in 2016 for a US audience, recreating the sound, visual, and emotional experiences of the underground scenes in New York, where extravagances were always allowed.
This updated monograph explores the genesis and history of a group that, despite its colorful collaboration with Andy Warhol, was overlooked by success during its brief existence (1965-1970). Too radical, too transgressive, and too uninhibited for their time, the Velvet Underground has become a cultural phenomenon over the decades, one that continues to fascinate audiences around the world.

MY WEEK BEATS YOUR YEAR | ENCOUNTERS WITH LOU REED
Edited and with texts by Pat Thomas. Compiled by Michael Heath. Foreword by Luc Sante. Designed by Philippe Karrer. Cover photograph by Mick Rock
Hat & Beard Press, hardcover, 304 p., 6 x 9 in. (15.24 x 22.86 cm), Los Angeles CA, USA, May 1, 2019

During his first major sit-down with the music press in 1977, between claiming all his songs were about guilt and revenge, Elvis Costello casually remarked, "I don't really listen to Lou Reed's records, but I never miss an interview with him."
Indeed, for all his publicly expressed loathing of the press in general and music journalists in particular, during his long career as a rock artist, Lou Reed was never less than entertaining in his dealings with the Fourth Estate. In fact, one could go so far as to claim that, for Lou, the press became as much an implement of expression as singing, composing, and playing music. In a style at times very much informed by his mentor Andy Warhol, Reed could play the media like a Marshall-amped Stradivarius.
To the majority of his fans, the apotheosis of Reed's relationship with the press, and most prominently regarded to this day, was the series of combative tête-à-têtes between Lou and the late great music journalist Lester Bangs, published in CREEM Magazine during the 1970s.
My Week Beats Your Year: Encounters with Lou Reed features 30+ interviews spanning his solo career, from the golden era of print rock-journalism, to the first online blogs. The compilation is one fan's humble attempt to move beyond the Bangs canon, and delve deeper into the distance and intimacy, cactus and mercury, that constituted Lou's post-Velvet Underground public media image.
This anthology will be an intimate portrait of Reed who, in addition to being notoriously prickly (to put it mildly), was also intelligent, articulate, and deeply passionate about what was important to him, both as a person and as a creative artist.

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND
Chris Roberts
Palazzo Editions Ltd, hardback, 192 p., 22,3 x 14,1 cm, United Kingdom, April 7, 2022
ISBN 978-1-78675-113-3
Over half a century since they exploded inevitably onto New York's underground music and art scenes, the legacy and mythology of The Velvet Underground continues to resonate and grow, as new generations embrace their enigmatic command of the darkest strain of alternative cool. Lou Reed, John Cale, Nico, Sterling Morrison and Moe Tucker, with the naïve encouragement of Andy Warhol, created a world of music, words and scenes which blew up the notion of the peace-and-love sixties and tapped into a nocturnal milieu of art, literature, drugs, sex and decadence. Their albums survive as caustic classics, among the most influential records ever made.
Not only did author Chris Roberts interview the late Lou Reed three times, he was also once told, "Move – you are sitting on my coat" by the unmistakable voice of Nico, backstage at a gig. Here he recounts and celebrates the fascinating, multi-faceted story of perhaps the most mysterious and unique rock band ever to exist. A complex, contrary, clashing set of characters who came together to start fires while drawing down darkness, The Velvets' legend will forever run run run
Chris Roberts has written about music, films, and the arts for everyone from the Guardian to Uncut and currently writes for Classic Rock, Record Collector and The Quietus. He has published books on Beyoncé, Lou Reed, Tom Jones, and Abba among many others. His book on pop fandom, Idle Worship, was hailed by the New York Times as "the most original book about rock 'n' roll ever." He lives in London.

LOU REED | THE KING OF NEW YORK
Will Hermes
Penguin Viking, United Kingdom, November 2, 2023
hardback, 560 pages, 23,6 x 16,2 cm
ISBN 978-01-241-29650-9
Since his death ten years ago, Lou Reed's living presence has only grown. The great rock-poet presided over the marriage of Brill Building pop and the European avant-garde, and left American culture transfigured. In Lou Reed: The King of New York, Will Hermes offers the definitive narrative of Reed's life and legacy, dramatizing his long, brilliant, and contentious dialogue with fans, critics, fellow artists, and assorted habitués of the demimonde. We witness Reed's complex partnerships with David Bowie, Andy Warhol, John Cale, and Laurie Anderson; track the deadpan wit, street-smart edge, and poetic flights that defined his craft as a singer and songwriter with the Velvet Underground and beyond; and explore the artistic ambition and gift for self-sabotage he took from his mentor Delmore Schwartz.
As Hermes follows Reed from Lower East Side cold-water flats to the landmark status he later achieved, he also tells the story of New York City as a cultural capital. The first biographer to draw on the New York Public Library's much-publicized Reed archive, Hermes employs the library collections, the release of previously unheard recordings, and a wealth of recent interviews to give us a new Lou Reed-a pioneer in living and writing about nonbinary sexuality and gender identity, a committed artist who pursued beauty and noise with equal fervor, and a turbulent and sometimes truculent man whose emotional imprint endures.

New updated edition of Bruno Blum's Lou Reed biography.

VELVET UNDERGROUND | MCMXCIII | NY REHEARSALS
Renaud Monfourny
Les Éditions du Caïd, Belgium, August 2016
26,8 x 21,7 cm, hardcover, 48 p.
ISBN 978-2-930754-06-2
18 black & white photos from 1993 tour rehearsals in New York City. Text in French & English.
1st edition of 1000 copies printed, including 25 limited edition issues with original photography signed by the artist.

Prosperi Buri
Dargaud, France, March 5, 2021
22,8 x 21 cm, hardcover, 80 p.
ISBN: 978 2205 087307
Velvet Underground story comic.

Massimo Palma
Éditions de la variation, Paris, France, April 21, 2023
19,5 x 12,2 cm, softcover, 120 p.
ISBN: 978-2-38389-031-7
Translated from the Italian by Manuel Esposito. Massimo Palma's essay first appeared in Italy in the first issue of Kaiak. A Philosophical Journey in 2014 under the title « Memorie dal sottosuolo de velluto. Su alcuni motivi nei Velvet Underground ». The text has been entirely revised and expanded by the author. The interview with Massimo Palma first appeared in June 2022 in the first issue of Variation.

seveninches by Le Boulon, Paris, France, October 17, 2024
18 x 13 cm, softcover, 130 p.
ISBN: 978-2-48727-046-6

Catalogue of the Warhol Live - Music And Dance in Andy Warhol's Work exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, including a large amount of Velvet Underground material.
"This catalog accompanying an exciting new exhibition reveals the myriad ways Warhol immersed himself in the music of his
time. Tracing back to Warhol s introduction to music through the musical comedies, songs, and soundtracks of his youth, the book opens with Warhol s portraits of the great films stars of his childhood. As the fascinating essays collected in this volume discuss, Warhol s renowned portraits of pop music icons such as Mick Jagger, Debbie Harry, and Grace Jones are just one manifestation of his interest in music. Warhol
collaborated with choreographer Merce Cunningham, served as producer for the Velvet Underground, incorporated music into his films, produced video-clips, designed dozens of record albums, filmed live concerts, and created multimedia spectacles. Although never a musician himself, Warhol appropriated the imagery of a pop icon for some of his most arresting and haunting self portraits. Designed to echo the music industry's
most recognizable emblem the album cover this dynamic book includes more than 350 illustrations, offering a refreshing new way to appreciate the talent and evolution of an artist who mirrored society s ever-changing tastes and interests."

"This is the definitive and comprehensive collection of Billy Name's black and white photographs from Warhol's Factory. Billy's photographs from this period (1964-68) are one of the most important photographic documents of any single artist in history.
Billy lived in a tiny closet at the Factory. He was responsible for the legendary 'silverizing' of the space using aluminium paint and aluminium foil to complete the instillation. When Andy gave Billy a Pentax Honeywell 35mm camera, he took on the role of resident photographer and archivist.
This visual essay, produced in collaboration with Billy, features a foreword by John Cale. It also includes an introduction by Glenn O'Brien and contributions from Factory alumnae including Gerard Malanga, Viva, Allen Midgette, Brigid Berlin and more. It offers an extensive trip through Warhol's world. Billy photographed the day-to-day happenings at the Factory, including visits from Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, Nico, Edie Sedgwick, Ivy Nicholson and Bob Dylan; filming Screen Tests and features like Chelsea Girls, Vinyl and My Hustler.
Featuring over 400 of Billy's black and white photographs, this volume is not to be missed."
